What we do

At Vara, we believe better breast cancer detection should be a standard offering for every woman, everywhere. Our AI-powered software platform, developed in close collaboration with radiologists in Germany, leads to higher cancer detection, lower false positive rate and alleviates the repetitive workload involved in routine screening – proven in the largest prospective study in healthcare to date with ~500,000 participating women.

Our mission is to make breast cancer screening more effective, measurable, and accessible. By enhancing early detection and ensuring outcomes backed by clinical evidence, we’re proud to contribute to national efforts focused on improving women’s health.

Founded in 2018 as the first company to emerge from Europe’s leading AI venture studio, Merantix, Vara has grown into an international team of 25 driven professionals. Our diverse team brings together entrepreneurs, healthcare experts, and technology innovators united by a common goal: transforming breast cancer screening for the better.

Your role

Want to work on something with a purpose, and make healthcare safer and more efficient?

We are looking for a motivated Software Engineer to join our team, working on our Clojure services, handling more than 1.5M studies with more than 20M images per year, to support the future of breast cancer detection. You will be building platforms to securely view and annotate X-rays, deliver medical reports, and aid the efficiency and accuracy of radiologists across Germany and beyond. Working closely with stakeholders and the Machine Learning team, you’ll see the full impact of your work across the entire development cycle: ideating and refining solutions for user needs, designing and implementing them alongside 3 other experienced developers, ensuring quality with our QA, deploying into production, and measuring the immediate impact your work can have.

Our application is written in full-stack Clojure (Clojure for the backend, ClojureScript for the frontend), and our tech stack includes Postgres, S3 object storage, Docker, and Terraform.

We define ourselves by a culture of friendship and ownership. We're looking for a capable, driven, and thoughtful person who can think outside of the box and add to our vision. Our hierarchy is flat and communication direct, which means that we operate and learn fast, as a team.
